Decide where the file lives

Automatic photo sync is convenient, but convenience can quietly create extra copies. Check whether the camera roll uploads to a cloud account, a shared family library or a computer you no longer control.

For images meant to remain private, use an encrypted local folder with a unique passphrase. Keep one intentional backup rather than a trail of forgotten duplicates.

Strip the map from the image

Phones may attach location, device and time information to a photograph. Remove metadata before sending a file, especially when the background contains a view, badge, document or reflection that identifies a place.

Cropping is not always enough. Check mirrors, browser tabs, tattoos, mail labels and window reflections at full size.

Choose the smallest audience

A disappearing-message timer can reduce casual exposure, but it cannot stop screenshots or another camera. Share only with someone you trust and only at a level you could live with if the platform failed.

If the answer is no, keep the image offline. Privacy is a valid creative ending, not a missed opportunity.
